Several unticketed fans tried to enter the Wembley stadium during Italy vs England Euro 2020 final match. The Italian team become the European Champions and lifted the Euro Cup after a triumph over England on 3-2 penalties. UEFA has opened a disciplinary investigation against the English FA following fans indiscipline behavior at the stadium when England lost the Euro title.
In a statement on Tuesday, UEFA said it has also initiated a separate investigation into events involving fans in and around Wembley, Sunday’s Euro 2020 final. The English FA also faces four UEFA charges of “invasion of the field by its supporters”, throwing objects and lighting fireworks, as well as “disturbance” during the national anthem.
The FA has already been fined 30,000 euros ($35,600) after a fan flashed a laser light on Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in order to disturb him during England’s semi-final win last week. England was again accused of booing “during the (Italian) national anthem” and “burning fireworks” in the final match.
The other two charges related to the final were attacks on the pitch during the game and fans “throwing objects”. Some spectators could not take their place due to the crowd entering the stand without tickets.
The London Metropolitan Police said during the handling of the final they made 86 arrests and a total of 19 officers were injured. UEFA said, “A UEFA Ethics and Discipline Inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation into incidents involving fans in and around the stadium. The details of this matter will be made available in the coming time.”
Italy won the final 3–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to secure their second European Championship title and the first in 1968. “The unacceptable visuals we saw yesterday were a small number of people who wanted to use football as an excuse to behave horribly towards the public and officials,” Deputy Commissioner Laurence Taylor said in a statement.
