Mark Lawrenson’s prediction for Liverpool and Man United. Mark Lawrenson, a former Liverpool defense, has predicted the Sunday Premier League matchup between the Reds and Manchester United (March 5). This match between two of the historically biggest clubs in the Premier League is frequently referred to as the Northwest Derby and is undoubtedly the biggest game in English football.
Although the two teams have had contrasting results this season, this game should be played at the top level. Legendary Reds player Lawrenson predicts that his old team will defeat their sworn enemies at Anfield. He also stated that the officiating must be excellent because there will be a lot on the line for both teams on Sunday.
Lawrenson believes Jurgen Klopp’s team will defeat Erik ten Hag’s scorching United team 2-1. To Paddy Power, he said: “On Wednesday night, everyone’s attention was focused on Manchester United’s arrival while I was watching Liverpool play Wolves. Simply choosing Anfield is what I’ll do. They’ve recently kept clean sheets, and they’re gradually beginning to appear better. It’s just one of those games where I believe they’ll be focused and the official will need to be strong because tackles will be flying in from all directions.”
Erik ten Hag, the Dutchman who took over as manager of Manchester United in the summer, has led the team to success this season. With 49 points from 24 games, the Red Devils are third in the standings. At Old Trafford, they defeated their opponent 2-1.
Meanwhile, Klopp’s team is currently sixth in the standings, six points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place with one game remaining. The Merseyside giants defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Tuesday, earning a much-needed victory. Additionally, they have successfully preserved four straight Premier League clean sheets. Gary Neville, a United legend, has issued a warning to his old team ahead of their Sunday visit to Anfield (March 5).
Neville said, via Football Daily, before the 239th meeting of the Northwest Derby: “The Manchester United players won’t be concerned about heading there on Sunday, I’m not saying. But anyone who has visited Anfield before, and the majority of that squad has, if not all of them, will be aware of how challenging it can be, how things can go wrong there, and how the crowd can get on top of you and complicate things for you, especially in that opening phase of the match.”
Neville continued: “Regardless of Liverpool’s current form, Manchester United will need to be at their utmost best and even more to defeat them on Sunday. But I do think that this Manchester United side can hurt Liverpool.” In their last 16 encounters with their fierce adversary, the Red Devils have only prevailed three times.
