Jamie Carragher shares his thoughts on the Manchester United duo. After Sevilla eliminated Manchester United from the UEFA Europa League, Liverpool great Jamie Carragher recently compared the duo of Antony and Jadon Sancho.
After losing to Sevilla on Thursday, April 20, 5-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the continental championship, Manchester United was unable to advance to the semifinals. The second leg of the match was won 3-0 by Youssef En-Nesyri’s team at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium thanks to his two goals and Loic Bade’s second-half goal.
Sancho and Antony both began the away leg of the semifinal match, but neither of them was able to stand out on the opposing sides. With four chances produced, the former was one of the better players for the Red Devils, but the latter was replaced after the half by Marcus Rashford who was only partially fit.
Carragher justified Antony’s outing on Twitter by drawing comparisons between him and Sancho. “Antony has accomplished more in six months than Sancho has in two years,” he wrote. However, Sancho receives very little criticism while Antony receives a lot.
Since leaving Ajax for an astronomical £86 million transfer fee last summer, Antony, 23, has drawn a lot of flak. In 38 games with the Red Devils this season across all competitions, he has eight goals and two assists.
Sancho, on the other hand, hasn’t been a very impressive acquisition for Erik Ten Hag’s team. He joined the Old Trafford team in 2021 after leaving Borussia Dortmund for £73 million, but he has only scored 10 goals in 69 games overall.
After Sevilla’s loss, Erik ten Hag defends a Manchester United player:
Despite David de Gea’s awful performance in his team’s recent 3-0 loss to Sevilla, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag supported him in a post-game press conference.
The 32-year-old De Gea was twice at fault for the Red Devils’ away loss in Seville. Before rushing out of his area irresponsibly for the third goal, he made a terrible ball to Harry Maguire in the process of setting up Youssef En-Nesyri’s opening goal.
In 30 Premier League games this season, De Gea, a former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, has recorded 14 clean sheets. In 48 games across all competitions during the current 2022-23 campaign, he has presided over 21 shutouts.
In response to a question from a reporter, Ten Hag said: “He is the one with the cleanest sheets in the Premier League; that shows he is a very capable goalkeeper.”
On Sunday, April 23, Manchester United will play Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup semifinal. In the final, the victor will take on either Manchester City or Sheffield United.
