Paul Scholes criticizes Manchester United star after losing to Sevilla. After Manchester United’s defeat to Sevilla, Paul Scholes criticizes a star.
After David de Ge assisted Sevilla in scoring the first goal against Manchester United on Thursday (20 April), Paul Scholes made fun of the custodian.
After a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Old Trafford, the Red Devils, and Sevilla advanced to the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarterfinal matchup. Before playing Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, they had won seven straight games against La Liga opponents.
Within the first eight minutes, a mistake from De Gea and Harry Maguire allowed Sevilla to score, shattering Manchester United’s game plan. Despite being pushed by three Sevilla players, the center-back requested the Spaniard throw the ball to him.
De Gea passed the ball to his captain, who dropped it after coming under pressure from the opposition. This gave Youssef En-Nesyri a straightforward opportunity, and he finished it perfectly.
While criticizing both players for the error that led to the hosts’ first goal, Scholes was particularly critical of De Gea, calling him “not a fantastic footballer.” On BT Sport, the former Manchester United midfielder said (via Eurosport): “Although David de Gea has been a great custodian, he is not a great football player. Although Harry Maguire wanted the pass, it’s important to consider the circumstances and the atmosphere in the stadium. I’m not sure why he needs the ball.”
He further added: “Read the situation no matter what the manager wants you to do. Take note of the surroundings around you. That is not appropriate here. Due to Sevilla’s aggressiveness in pursuing the ball, they were duped into playing such passes.”
Without receiving a response, Sevilla added two more goals, including En-Nesyri’s 81st-minute goal, which was the direct result of De Gea completely messing up a clearance.
David de Gea is expected to sign a new deal with Manchester United:
According to reports, David de Gea is in line for a new Manchester United, extending his contract at Old Trafford past the summer.
It’s possible to add another year to De Gea’s current contract, according to ESPN. But before the start of the following campaign, the Red Devils intend to have the former Atletico Madrid custodian on a lower wage.
The new contract will result in a decrease in De Gea’s base salary but will include significant performance-related incentives. At Old Trafford, he is thought to make a weekly salary of about £350,000.
The 32-year-old’s proficiency with the ball is lacking, as shown by his team’s loss against Sevilla. His passing skills have also been questioned quite a bit in recent years.
