3 Players to replace Jordan Henderson as captain. Ever since Stevan Gerrard’s retirement in 2015, Jordan Henderson has served as Liverpool’s captain. The England international has led the Reds to several victories during his time there, including one Premier League championship and one UEFA Champions League victory.
Henderson, however, who turned 33 earlier this month, is inevitably deteriorating. His game time has been limited in recent seasons due to injuries as well.
Moving forward, the Reds will need to select a new captain. Here are the names of the top three possibilities to succeed Steven Gerrard as captain of Liverpool.
#3 Alisson Becker
Alisson Becker joined Liverpool from AS Roma during the 2018 summer transfer window, and since then, he has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the world. The Brazilian international has so far appeared in 173 Premier League games for the Reds, recording 78 shutouts.
The 30-year-old goaltender was named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Season in 2021–2022 and has two Premier League Golden Gloves to his name.
In a 2021 UEFA Champions League match, Alisson led the Reds as captain. He is one of the contenders to take over as captain of the Reds.
#2 Virgil van Dijk
In recent years, Virgil van Dijk has been crucial to Liverpool’s success. In the 2018 January transfer window, the Dutch international moved from Southampton to the Reds.
He has so far appeared in 222 games for the Merseyside team in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and dishing out 12 assists. In addition to being named twice to the PFA Premier League Team of the Season, Van Dijk was named the PFA Premier League Player of the Season for the 2018–19 campaign.
The Reds’ third captain at the moment, the former Southampton defender has served as captain before. He is also the football team’s captain for the Netherlands. The Reds’ selection of the 31-year-old defender as captain is superb.
#1 Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold, a graduate of Liverpool’s junior program, has been a constant in the senior team since the 2017–18 campaign. The England international has so far appeared in 273 games (across all competitions) for his hometown team, contributing to 72 assists and scoring 16 goals.
He was named the PFA Premier League Team of the Season three times and won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award in 2019–20.
The 24-year-old defender has been predicted by Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders to take over as the team’s captain in the future. During the 2020–21 season, Alexander-Arnold led the Reds in a UEFA Champions League match against Midtjylland. He is a strong favorite to succeed Jordan Henderson as captain in the future.
