Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior touches Ronaldo’s record. With his goal against Manchester City on May 9, Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior tied Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous record in the UEFA Champions League. The Brazilian star scored a stunning goal at the Santiago Bernabeu during the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.
He has now had an impact in 11 straight Champions League starts, tying the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo, the competition’s all-time leading scorer.
In the 36th minute, Vinicius sprinted at the Manchester City defense before launching a shot past Ederson and into the City goal. The 22-year-old made a strike of the highest caliber. In 51 games across tournaments, he has already scored 23 goals and contributed 21 assists for Los Blancos.
Last year’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool featured a Brazilian goal that gave Real Madrid the victory. He is once again playing a crucial role in the group’s push to capture their 15th UCL trophy this year.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration following his goal against Chelsea was imitated by Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo:
In the second leg of Real Madrid’s quarterfinal match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Rodrygo Goes scored twice for Real. The Brazilian mimicked Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Siuuu’ celebration after scoring his second goal. Los Blancos triumphed 2-0 in the match and 4-0 overall to take the tie.
After the game, Rodrygo spoke with the media and said that although he initially considered executing the knee slide celebration, he ultimately chose to honor Ronaldo. He stated: “When I scored, my first instinct was to consider performing one of those knee slides, but my knee hurts a little when I flex it. I decided to imitate Cristiano, who is my idol, and do as he does.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Ronaldo has motivated countless young athletes throughout the world. Since he has scored 140 goals overall in the Champions League, no one will be able to match his record in that competition.
Five times, four with Los Blancos and one with Manchester United, he has captured the trophy. Before leaving the team for Juventus in 2018, he contributed to the team’s three consecutive UCL victories.
