Nerazzurri beat error-ridden AC Milan. In the Italian Super Cup, Inter easily defeated toothless crosstown rivals AC Milan after scoring twice in the first 20 minutes and adding a third with 15 minutes left. Despite having fewer possessions overall, Inter dominated the match. In a 3-0 blowout, they made AC Milan’s offense ineffective while generating plenty of opportunities on the break.
Early on in the game, they left their imprint. Within 10 minutes, Inter had completely dismantled the Rossoneri, thanks to Federico Dimarco’s slick finish on a counterattack that gave his team a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after, Edin Dzeko added a second goal by cutting inside of a sliding Sandro Tonali and burying the ball in the bottom corner.
Milan tried to come back into the game, but they were unable to create a clear opportunity. And they paid for it as Lautaro Martinez finished beautifully from close range after dodging Fikayo Tomori as Inter scored their third goal on the counter. Inter simply finished the game out from there, defeating AC Milan in their first-ever final, and positioning themselves for what could be a memorable few months.
Federico Dimarco wasn’t meant to be a mainstay in the starting lineup when Inter signed Robin Gosens a year ago. But this season, the wingback has flourished, and today, he was at his very best. He frequently charged down the left wing, forcing Davide Calabria deep into his half. He was rewarded for his efforts as well, scoring the first goal with an exquisite finish before moving Calabria to make room for Dzeko to score the second.
While he is not solely to blame for Milan’s defensive issues this season, Tomori has fallen far short of his exhilarating potential. On Wednesday night in Riyadh, he put on a forgettable performance, getting pushed around by Dzeko before being overrun by Lautaro. He performed poorly throughout, permitting Lautaro to roll him and score Inter’s third goal, which ended Milan’s chances. Tomori is still only 25, therefore things will get better. But this performance was appalling.
The teams are now focusing on Serie A. While Inter plays fifth-place Empoli, AC Milan faces a difficult matchup against Lazio. Next month’s Champions League knockout matches are another exciting prospect for both teams.
