Bayern Munich to see points drop. At the break, Bayern Munich led RB Leipzig 1-0 but lost to them early in the second half, losing ground in the title chase. Bayern gained the lead in the first period of the first Bundesliga match in 68 days, but they gradually lost control of the game to a more aggressive Leipzig team. Additionally, the league leaders held on for a 1-1 draw after the home team tied the score.
Bayern’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the game’s first goal by easily tapping in Serge Gnabry’s floating cross. Bayern could have scored twice more in the opening period, but Gnabry’s attempt hit the post and Leon Goretzka’s header was disallowed for offside.
The second half began with Leipzig playing better, and they were rewarded when Marcel Halstenberg scored an equalizer from close range. Late in the game, both teams had chances to win. Konrad Laimer fired over the crossbar in the 92nd minute, and then Thomas Muller missed the target by a whisker.
Both teams were somewhat satisfied with the result, with Bayern gaining a difficult away point and Leipzig doing just enough to stay in the Bundesliga title race despite trailing by six points.
For Leipzig, Dominik Szoboszlai has had a breakout season. He was excellent again on Friday night. He was a continuous menace down the right and managed to get himself an assist, although a lucky one, on his team’s lone goal. Additionally, he carefully followed back and reduced the threat of Alphonso Davies in the last third.
Even though picking up a point while traveling is not to be despised, Julian Nagelsmann could have obtained more from his side in this situation. Bayern was only allowed to take seven shots, and just two of those were on goal. His in-game leadership was extremely lacking. Sane hardly ever participated in the game, while Choupo-Moting, while getting himself on the scoresheet, was generally useless for extended periods.
Nagelsmann finally added Kingsley Coman and Muller, but some earlier adjustments would have produced a better outcome. Both clubs will only have four days until their next game after having to wait 68 days. Tuesday’s Bundesliga matchups see Bayern taking on Koln and Leipzig taking on relegation-fighting Schalke.
