Man United to bid €50m Milan goalkeeper. With David de Gea’s future in doubt, Manchester United is allegedly prepared to make a bid for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport reports that talks between the Red Devils and the Nerazzurri had reached a critical point. This week, the team representing Erik Ten Hag ‘will submit’ a $50 million initial bid.
Ten Hag and Onana previously collaborated at Ajax, where they were successful. Under the Dutch manager, the Cameroonian made 145 appearances in various leagues while recording 58 shutouts. They shared three Eredivisie championships and might play together again at Manchester United.
The 27-year-old joined Inter on a free transfer when Ten Hag left the Johan Cruyff Arena last summer. He has performed admirably in the San Siro, with 19 shutouts in 41 appearances this past season across all competitions.
Onana’s acquisition occurs as concerns about De Gea’s future at United intensify. The Spanish goalkeeper’s current contract is about to expire, but no new agreement has been approved.
De Gea, 32, had a rocky previous season at Old Trafford among dubious performances. With 17 clean sheets in 38 games, he earned the Golden Glove Premier League award. He made many mistakes throughout the season and was particularly at fault for Ilkay Gundogan’s winning goal in Manchester City’s victory against United in the FA Cup final.
Inter may be inclined to sell Onana because they are having financial problems. He just joined the San Siro last summer, and his contract is only good for the next four years.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola lauded Manchester United target Andre Onana:
The UEFA Champions League final served as ample proof for Manchester United that Onana could thrive at Old Trafford. Despite being on the losing side, the Cameroonian shot-stopper impressed.
Manchester City, United’s neighbors, agonizingly defeated Inter by a score of 1-0. Ataturk Stadium’s winner was Rodri. However, if Onana’s performance hadn’t been so strong, it might have been even higher.
The former Ajax custodian was outstanding in possession, made two high claims, and made three saves. Ten of his long ball attempts were successful, and Pep Guardiola, the manager of City, gave him high marks.
Despite their triumph, the treble-winning coach emphasized how difficult Onana made things for his team: “When you have a custodian like Onana, together with Calhanoglu and Barella, who can read everyone’s passing intentions flawlessly, the forwards hold the ball up and move it around. It is quite challenging. Without this custodian, it would be a little easier, but still quite difficult.”
It was just one of Onana’s numerous standout efforts this season. Guardiola’s remarks give the impression that he might not be all that happy if the Cameroonian joined Manchester United this summer.
Ten Hag led the Inter goalkeeper’s development into one of Europe’s finest ball-players. He might be the solution to his previous manager’s De Gea issue because he fits in perfectly with the current Red Devils lineup.
