Scott Carson won the Champions League twice. After Manchester City defeated Inter Milan in this season’s final by a score of 1-0, reserve keeper Scott Carson made history by winning the UEFA Champions League twice.
With Liverpool, Carson previously won it in the 2004–05 campaign. After a dramatic 120 minutes that ended 3-3, the Reds overcame AC Milan on penalties. But Carson didn’t participate in either of those championship games at all.
In the 2004–05 matchup, Liverpool’s goalie was Jerzy Dudek. In the championship game of the current season, City’s goaltender was Ederson Moraes. Coincidentally, both of Carson’s Champions League victories occurred at Istanbul’s renowned Ataturk Stadium.
Along with Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta of AC Milan, Carson is the player with the longest gap between two UEFA Champions League victories. It was won by all three players, a competition first, 18 years apart.
On the other hand, Manchester City became the first team in company history to win the Champions League. They also won the Premier League and the FA Cup. Since Manchester United in 1999, Pep Guardiola’s club is the only English team to have won the triple crown in Europe. For the Cityzens, it was a season to remember.
Scott Carson’s success with Manchester City won’t end with the Champions League victory:
Only two appearances had Scott Carson made for Manchester City’s first team so far. He has also had one clean sheet for the team. This season, the 37-year-old didn’t make a single appearance.
But the club’s future will still involve the seasoned custodian. He recently renewed his agreement with the Cityzens for an additional season. In response to the agreement, Carson stated (as quoted by Manchester City’s official website): “I’m thrilled to continue playing for City in 2023–2024. Every day I look forward to working with Pep, Xabi Mancisidor, and our outstanding players. I hope to assist all of our goalkeepers in performing at their highest level.”
Regarding the current two-time Champions League champion, Txiki Begiristain said: “Scott is a valuable member of our team and gets along well with the goalies and coaches. We’re thrilled that he extended his contract. To make sure he is prepared to perform when needed on the pitch, I hope to see him encourage his teammates and practice hard.”
Scott Carson may find it difficult to get first-team opportunities with Ederson Moraes and Stefan Ortega Moreno on the team. The player’s experience is valued by Manchester City, though.
