Riyad Mahrez snubs £120 million offer from Saudi club. Attacker Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City reportedly turned down Al Ahli’s generous £120 million offer.
Al Ahli was prepared to give Mahrez a three-year contract worth £40 million annually, according to Football Insider. The Algerian, however, passed on the opportunity to join the list of well-known players who have recently joined the Saudi Pro League.
Mahrez’s contract with the recently crowned European champions has two years left on it. Al Malaki isn’t given up on the 32-year-old, though, and they plan to make another offer in the coming days.
The City winger was a key contributor to Pep Guardiola’s team’s treble-winning effort this season. Mahrez played in 47 games across different competitions, tallying 15 goals and dishing out 13 assists. The Algerian international beat Sheffield United 3-0 in the FA Cup semifinals, scoring a remarkable hat-trick in the process.
Mahrez, though, did not play a part in Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final. According to The Mirror, his manager Guardiola has suggested that the player is unhappy about not getting enough playing time this year: “He always has a bad attitude towards me when he doesn’t play. He makes me aware of his moods. I’m thrilled for Riyad because he loves football and has sacrificed a lot for Man City, and I hope he keeps doing so in the future.”
Mahrez transferred from Leicester City to the Cityzens in 2018 for £60 million. He has also won three League Cups, two FA Cups, four Premier Leagues, and the Champions League.
Considering bids for Kalvin Phillips, Manchester City:
Kalvin Phillips struggled mightily in his first year at the Etihad. Even though Kalvin Phillips joined the team just last summer, Manchester City is allegedly open to offers for the midfielder.
The Daily Mail claims that the Cityzens are willing to trade the Englishman who has had trouble getting game time this year. Phillips has a battle on his hands for first-team minutes but wants to stay at the Etihad and establish himself.
The 27-year-old paid about £42 million to transfer from Leeds United to Guardiola’s team last summer. Despite having injury troubles at the beginning of the season, he still managed to make 21 appearances in various tournaments.
According to sources, Phillips has been linked with a move to Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp’s team is reportedly willing to spend £35 million to sign him. The departures of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Arthur Melo have forced the Reds to make changes to their midfield.
