A Maiden victory for Graham potter and team at Goodison Park.
Everton 2-3 Brighton & Hove Albion.
A second-half rally proves too little, too late for Everton, as Brighton run out winners in the pair’s first Premier League clash of 2022 in a five-goal thriller. Doubles for Alexis Mac Allister and Anthony Gordon on each side helped drive the action – but it is the Toffees who are unstuck by the Seagulls in the end. Full-time at Goodison Park.
Where is Rafa Benitez left now? There have already been changes behind the scenes in response to his side’s poor form, but the Spaniard’s credibility in the game – attained in no small part on the other side of this city – means he has survived so far. He really needs to turn things around now though,
Everton boss Rafael Benitez:
“I like to remember the things we do well and remember the things we don’t do right. We have shown character in a lot of games, but we’re not capable to avoid mistakes that are costing us games. We had a slow start, and after another mistake conceding a corner. It’s a big mountain to climb and it’s not easy with these mistakes. You miss a penalty and it’s even more difficult.”
Brighton boss Graham Potter:
“When you follow us, you can see we’re not one team and one team. It’s quite normal and it’s something we do anyway. The games depend on the opponent, and the consistency comes from the way we want to play. Who is playing and the formation is what changes.”
