Pep Guardiola makes history by winning the Treble. It was a historic day for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as he led the Premier League team to their first-ever UEFA Champions League victory. In the championship match, Cityzens defeated Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium.
Rodri scored the game’s lone goal in the 68th minute. As the 2022–23 Premier League and FA Cup champions into the Champions League final, City achieved the treble.
The Spanish manager made history by being the first coach to ever accomplish the feat twice. In the 2008–09 season, he did it with Barcelona. Guardiola’s accomplishment is all the more impressive given that he has won the triple with two different clubs.
The Spaniard also became the sixth manager to win the Champions League with two different clubs as a manager. Jose Mourinho (Porto and Inter Milan), Jupp Heynckes (Bayern Munich and Real Madrid), Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan and Real Madrid), Ernst Happel (Hamburg and Feyenoord), and Ottmar Hitzfield (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund) are the other five managers to do so.
Following Manchester City’s victory in the UEFA Champions League final, Pep Guardiola said:
Manchester City failed to win the Champions League despite being outstanding domestically under Pep Guardiola. But that is no longer the case.
Following his role in guiding the Sky Blue to their first-ever Champions League victory, the Spanish coach felt at ease. The Manchester City manager, speaking to the media following the match against Inter Milan, remarked (per The Guardian): “It was predetermined that we would triumph this season, and we did. I’m worn out, at ease, and content right now. This trophy is f*king impossible to win. We were aware of the difficulty. They are excellent. We were apprehensive in the first half, but we just needed to be patient. I advised them to wait.”
Guardiola added the following when discussing the narrow margins that enabled City to win the treble: “With Ederson at the end, you have to be lucky, and this competition is [a coin toss].” We gained momentum by winning the FA Cup and Premier League, and now we have this. We did not perform at our best. We require a break, and I lack the energy to consider the upcoming season. Our task is to start from scratch. The triple is extremely difficult to win.”
Since Manchester United in 1998–1999, Manchester City is the only English team to have won the European Triple Crown. Over the past few years, they have had an incredible group of players with a stable core. The group, at last, achieved its full potential.
