To reclaim first place in the Bundesliga table Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 5-1. With Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry, both scoring braces before the break Bayern had just come off a disappointing loss to Eintracht Frankfurt and was clearly looking to make a statement. Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen on a 5-1 match score thanks to braces from Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.
Lewandowski scored the first goal and it took the visitors only three minutes to assert their dominance. Dayot Upamecano deflected a free-kick from Joshua Kimmich to the back post, where the Pole flicked it home spectacularly. Bayern dominated the first half, with Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies, and Leon Goretzka all coming close before the half-hour mark.
Bayern Munich eventually doubled their lead when Lewandowski ended a breathless counterattack. Soon after, Thomas Muller diverted Niklas Sule’s scruffy shot past Lukas Hradecky to make it 3-0. Serge Gnabry ran in front of Hradecky seconds later to turn in Muller’s cross nearly right from the kickoff, giving Die Roten the fourth goal.
Before halftime, Gnabry swept home a cross from the edge of the box to make it 5-0 – yep, 5-0. With Patrik Schick decisively completing Florian Wirtz’s through play Leverkusen regained their pride after the break. On the other hand, Bayern Munich did not mount a comeback and saw out the remainder of the game without incident.
