Top 3 prospects for Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial position. Tottenham Hotspur fired Antonio Conte at the end of March of this year. At the end of the season, Conte’s contract expired, but Spurs decided enough was enough and ended his stay.
Last year, the Italian led Spurs to a fourth-place finish. However, they were eliminated from the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League at the time of his firing.
Cristian Stellini, his deputy manager, assumed temporary leadership. He was fired as well after Spurs lost 6-1 to Newcastle United, dropping them six points out of the top four. Ryan Mason, a former player, then temporarily assumed the position until the completion of the campaign.
Despite numerous persistent reports, the Spurs have not confirmed a new manager in nearly three months. Today, we take a look at four potential management candidates Spurs may be considering.
#1 Luis Enrique:
After leaving Spain following their 2022 World Cup elimination against Morocco, Luis Enrique is currently jobless. During his tenure with FC Barcelona, Enrique won two La Liga championships, three Copa del Reys, and a Champions League.
The Spaniard uses a possession-heavy system that is appealing to the eye and might help Spurs get back to playing enjoyable football. Spurs supporters have claimed that under Jose Mourinho and Conte, the game has not been as enjoyable because they have been focused on winning titles. Enrique has expertise in playing entertaining football and winning championships.
Following Luciano Spaletti’s departure from the Serie A champions, Enrique is being linked to Napoli. Despite this, according to football.london, the CEO of Napoli intimated that Enrique “prefers the Premier League.” If Spurs believe Enrique to be their man, this is good news for them.
#2 Julian Nagelsmann:
Young and ambitious, German coach Julian Nagelsmann is only 35 years old but already has a wealth of knowledge. His first position was with Hoffenheim in 2016, the year the team made Champions League history by qualifying for the competition.
Due to his performance, he was hired by RB Leipzig, where he guided the team to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2019–20 season.
Bayern Munich announced Nagelsmann’s hiring following the departure of Hansi Flick on a five-year contract. In the season 2021–2022, he won the Bundesliga championship.
However, Nagelsmann was fired in March with Bayern behind Borussia Dortmund by two points. This occurred while Bayern was still playing in the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League.
Nagelsmann can bring entertaining football to the Spurs and plays high-pressing football. He may be the energetic young coach Spurs need to breathe new life into the team because of his established track record.
#3 Ange Postecoglou:
Ange Postecoglou’s name has caused discord among Spurs supporters. While he lacks the notoriety of the previously named managers, he nevertheless has a reasonably good track record.
Postecoglou has been a manager since 1996, but only recently has his name gained more recognition. He managed the Australian national side from 2013 to 2017, leading the country to its first AFC Asian Cup.
He next relocated to Yokohama F. Marinos, where in 2019 he won the J1 League. His achievements in Japan led to a 2021 transfer to Celtic of the Scottish Premiership. In each of the previous two seasons, Postecoglou guided Celtic to the championship and two Scottish League Cups.
Celtic plays a very aggressive kind of football that has helped them accumulate 99 points in the Scottish Premiership while also scoring 114 goals. Postecoglou might be the right choice for Spurs if they want to take a chance.
Under Potter, Swansea placed tenth in the 2018–19 season. This was sufficient for Brighton to recruit the English manager instead of Chris Hughton.
The only negative aspect of Potter’s otherwise brilliant career is his time at Chelsea. It was Potter’s responsibility to have Chelsea’s new players playing well together while also assembling his ideal squad. He never appeared to be able to do it, though. After losing 11 of his 31 games for Chelsea, with the team in 11th position, he was fired.
The failure of Potter at Chelsea, a rival team in London, makes Potter’s employment by Spurs risky. There is no questioning Potter’s skill as a coach, however, Chelsea was a position that never seemed to fit him.
